In the first 4 to 24 hours after a strenuous workout, your body enters a recovery period where it starts responding to the inflammation and micro-tears within your muscle fibers. Then, it begins repairing the damage so your muscle proteins can regenerate.4 A lot of the recovery happens in the 24- to 48-hour window, as your body works to replenish glycogen stores and rebuild muscle tissue.5

But the full process of repairing muscle, gaining strength, and feeling like you're back to normal functionality (or better) can take at least 2 days—sometimes, up to several days.6,7

Signs You Need Better Muscle Recovery

So, how do you know if your muscles are recovering properly? If muscle fibers and tissues don't have an opportunity to repair and rebuild new muscle, you might notice some physical and performance-related signs, such as muscle damage or pain.

Common Physical Indicators

When inflamed muscles don't get a chance to recover, you may experience fatigue, dehydration, severe soreness, or delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS).8 DOMS is when muscle pain or muscle stiffness kicks in 24 to 72 hours after intense exercise. This onset of muscle soreness is a common experience for anyone ramping up their training.9

1. Sleep and Rest
